Disintegration of Six Different Quartz Types during Heating to 1600 °C

This work investigates the high temperature behavior of six different quartz types A, B, C, D, F and G during heating to elevated temperatures. These contain amounts impurities, from 1% 0.1%, have earlier shown degree disintegration heating. Melting experiments 1750 °C been performed find softening melting temperatures, it is found that there are significant variations between types. A higher content impurities lowers temperature. The surface has also studied 1600 in a confocal microscope. From this, mainly happens at two intervals, ~300–600 ~1300–1600 °C, mostly due volume changes either SiO2 matrix or impurity areas. cracks occur areas, expanding grain boundaries, damaged uneven some cases cavities escaped fluid inclusions.
